I don’t really like Fall.
I don’t know how to dress for it; in the morning its 0 degrees and by the afternoon it’s 17!
I need 15 minutes every morning, just to figure out what to wear.
It reminds me of my neighbours kids… In the morning, my neighbour has to put a jacket on her son, and her son says “mom, I don’t need this jacket, yesterday I was so hot in the afternoon and I was sweating at recess.” She has to explain to him, every morning that he can take the jacket off for recess, but in the morning it’s not warm enough to just be in your shirt.
I hear yea little man, you’re either sweating in the afternoon or freezing in the morning.
You can’t win!
Mostly, I dislike Fall because I know what comes next; Winter!
I really don’t like Winter, actually I hate it! I’m always cold, I don’t partake in any winter activities, my car always gets stuck somewhere, and filling up your gas tank is a horrendous chore.
However, I’m going to change up my attitude (well, I’m going to try). After all, I am Canadian, I should celebrate the multi seasons we get and embrace the climate change, because let’s face it, I have to!
My goal today, is to come up with 20 things that I like about Fall and Winter (ten each season) and really try to focus my energy on this list on the days I’m feeling cold and not very Canadian.
What I Like about Fall
1. The pretty colours of the season. I read this quote once and I just adore it (if you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably already read it); ‘The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let the dead things go.”
2. It’s always time for tea. I have really become a fan of drinking tea. I start my morning with a tea every day and usually end it with one as well. However, I must admit, there’s just something special about sipping on tea, when you’re drinking it for its warmth as well as for its taste.
3. Leggings, Boots and Scarves. All my favourite attire is perfectly meant for the season that is Fall.
4. Pumpkin Décor. I used to LOVE carving pumpkins when I was younger. I must admit, I haven’t done it in a couple of years, but I still love checking out other people’s carvings.
5. Watching Hocus Pocus. Most people think the epitome of being a girl in Fall is drinking a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, well for me, I think it’s watching this movie. I have yet to see it this year, but I know a girls night to watch it is in the works!
6. Lighting fires and candles in your home. No explanation needed. This is the definition of cozy.
Ok, I change my mind; I’m going to shorten my list to 12 things total, 6 that I like for each season. 10 is just dragging this topic out (and too difficult for me to come up with).
What I Like about Winter
1. Christmas. I love the joy of the season, holiday parties, seeing family and friends, and decorating the Christmas tree. I don’t know about you guys, but I love decorating the tree. Trying to make it look perfect, pretty, elegant and festive. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have kids, because I hardly like when my husband helps decorate it!
2. A fresh snow fall. I do love looking out the window (key word here is looking out the window, not venturing out in it) after a fresh snow fall. I’m not a photographer, but there’s something magical about a fresh snow fall, it makes we want to pull out my camera and start snapping away.
3. Celebrating the end of the year and a brand new start with friends, family and a husband I love. I don’t normally make New Year’s resolutions, but I do take time to reflect on the year’s past and things and moments I’m thankful for, while making new goals for the year ahead.
4. Christmas Morning. I’m no longer 9 years old, but it doesn’t even matter. I love Christmas morning. Throughout the years, Christmas morning has changed, but what hasn’t changed is the feeling of family. Waking up to people you love, drinking tea and eating breakfast to Christmas songs in the background and staying in your pajamas longer than your normally do any other day.
5. Soup Season. I don’t know if this would ever be on anyone else’s list, but I love a hot bowl of soup on a cold Winter’s day. Want to step it up a notch? Make your own soup! No better feeling and sense of accomplishment. Make a big batch and freeze the rest for another day!
6. Entertaining. My husband and I host quite often, we really enjoy it. However, there’s something in the combination of a fire burning, Christmas music playing, a festively decorated home, great friends and family and good food. It’s definitely my favourite time to entertain.
Wow, I surprised myself there. I found it a bit challenging to complete my list for Fall but I breezed through my list for Winter. Look at that, maybe I’m better prepared and excited for the season that I ‘hate’ more than I think I am….
